lamb boiled dumplings, pork and leek fried dumplings, and dry bean curd at qingdao bread food. the dumplings came with this incredible garlic vinegar. i much preferred the boiled dumplings as the fried were just a bit too … bready.
brioche french toast and pastrami hash at maximiliano. probably the best french toast ive ever had. after this we decided that we had to stop eating so much rich food because not every meal should lead to food coma.
beef roll from 101 noodle express. this is a dish that i first read about in 2008/2009 and have been waiting to try ever since. and it did not disappoint, even as leftovers later in the night and the next day.
pizza pollo asado from trader joe’s, with a handful of grape tomatoes. much better it you think about it as some sort of polenta cake.
i can’t really cook right now since i’m living in a temp place and i don’t have my own kitchen so i’ve been living on this kind of stuff for a week. then i hit the san gabriel valley hard so look out for goodies coming up.
my first workday lunch, a “bibimbap” from a forgettable place across the street from my office. there’s a real death of viable* lunch options nearby so for the rest of the week i brought my signature beetroot turkey sandwich assembled from trader joe’s ingredients.
the bowl had a lovely variety of veggies but the sauce was like a soy dressing and therefore NOT bibimbap.
*i’m right on top of umamicatessen but i’m not that meatloving nor could i afford to hit that up on a regular basis. there’s a food court at the fashion mart that seemed kind of gross and a cute nearby deli but i didn’t feel like a sandwich that day.
lemongrass chicken banh mi from good girl dinette in highland park, my new neighborhood. i got in on saturday afternoon and after getting to my new place i basically went to the first place nearby i could remember.
the chicken was really tender, so surprisingly good for chicken, and the bread was tasty but it was missing that quintessential vietnamese fishiness. the slaw was kind of a disaster and i didn’t finish it.
i haven’t made pasta sauce in a while but i made a big batch with mushrooms and sweet italian sausage. it ended up lasting a really long time because it was too mushroomy for jason, even though he’s the one who bought that quantity of mushrooms.
i had it over rice when the pasta ran out, which is delicious.
